Best way to mark and filter “inactive” contacts?

I’m looking for the best way to mark contacts as “Inactive” in HubSpot and be able to filter them out easily from the main Contacts view, while also making it clear on the company record that those contacts are inactive.

Here’s the challenge:
We need a way to keep certain contacts (like retired employees or people who’ve left their company) in HubSpot for historical purposes, but we don’t want them showing up when viewing or exporting active contact lists.

I’ve considered a few approaches:

  • Custom property (Active/Inactive): This lets me filter by status, but it doesn’t show that status clearly on the company record, and the contact still appears on the “Associated contacts” card.

  • Association labels (Inactive): This makes it easy to see which contacts are inactive on the company record, but you can’t filter or sort by association labels on the main Contacts page.

Ideally, I’m looking for a solution that allows me to:

  • Keep inactive contacts in HubSpot for historical reference

  • Clearly show that a contact is inactive on the company record

  • Filter or hide inactive contacts when viewing or exporting contact lists

  • Avoid double data entry (updating both a label and a property)

Has anyone found a good system or workaround for managing inactive contacts that achieves both visibility on the company view and filtering capability?
